This programme has been designed to prepare individuals aspiring to work in early childhood education with advanced knowledge and skills required to educate and care for infants,

toddlers and young children in an ECE setting.  Students will be able to confidently engage with, and support, children, families/whanau and other ECE educators in

multicultural services.  It will provide them with the fundamental knowledge and skills they require to progress to further study and/or work in a range of ECE settings.

PROGRAMME CONTENT INCLUDES:

  • Support the development and learning of children
  • Implement the principles and strands of Te Whāriki
  • Legislation, regulations and organisations that support the wellbeing of children and whanau
  • Understand diversity, multiculturalism, ECE philosophies, socio-cultural theories and cultural contexts of ECE services
  • Beliefs, ethical values, goals and strategies to influence ECE practice and development
  • Observe children and develop learning plans
  • Provide care and safe practices
  • Effective communication for appropriate, respectful, reciprocal and responsive relationships
  • Guide the behaviour of tamariki
  • Using Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori in an ECE setting

QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care Level 4

ENTRY CRITERIA:

All students who wish to enrol must go through a selection interview process. Participants who meet the criteria below are able to take part in these programmes:

  • Commitment to completing the qualifications    
  • Commitment to move to higher level education on completion of the programme     
  • Have an appropriate level of literacy & numeracy skill to study at Level 4
  • Pass a safety check for the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014
