Adult Literacy & Numeracy Education Level 5

This programme is designed for education practitioners aspiring to or engaged in supporting foundation-level learners in literacy and numeracy education, particularly within foundation-level programmes and non-workplace contexts. It equips graduates with expertise in teaching design, facilitation, assessment, and evaluation, tailored to the needs of diverse learner groups.

 

Programme content includes:

  • Design learning that is pedagogically and culturally appropriate to meet literacy and numeracy needs of learners
  • Facilitate quality learner-centred teaching that respects the mana and diverse cultural backgrounds of adult learners, and the wider educational and societal context
  • Plan and use a range of adult literacy and numeracy education facilitation and learning strategies, including technology-enhanced teaching and learning
  • Produce and use adult literacy and numeracy education diagnostic, formative and summative assessment tools to identify specific learner needs and strengths
  • Evaluate and reflect on own literacy and numeracy teaching practice and explore options to improve it

Length and hours:

Flexible

  • 32 weeks
  • Includes 96 hours of workshops, 96 workplace-based learning, 608 hours self-directed learning
  • Workshops scheduled to meet the timetable for each intake

 

Venue:

Usually held at the Whangārei Campus, but if there is sufficient

interest, other venues will be considered

 

Entry criteria:

All students who wish to enrol must go through a selection interview process.  Participants who meet this eligibility are

able to take part in these programmes:

  • Aged 16 years and above and left school
  • Commitment to completing the qualifications
  • Have an appropriate level of literacy & numeracy skill to study at Level 5
  • Minimum of Level 4 qualification preferably in Adult & Tertiary Teaching, or can demonstrate equivalent skills
  • Students are required to have a placement in the industry where they can deliver literacy and numeracy education as part of their role or in the community as a volunteer
  • You may also need to pass a safety check for the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014 dependent on your placement
